Under 14s football qualifying Final vs Tatura

THE sun was shining and the Under 14s were ready to embark on their first finals campaign in the Goulburn Murray junior league.

Unfortunately, it was Tatura who started off well and hit the scoreboard.

Tatura having most of the play and were the ones to take advantage early.

Darby Hoare came onto the field part way through the quarter and had an instant impact, with his ferocious tackling and pressure.

Ollie Swain kicked from the wing onto Ethan Saxon who was about 50m out. Ethan kicked the football to the square and Haimi Wolfenden got on the end of it and kicked Euroa’s first goal.

After the first quarter the score was Euroa 1-0-6 to Tatura 3-6-24.

Coach Saxon asked for more from his players to show some determination and want for the ball, player on player defence was required.

Ethan, Darby, and Ollie Swain responded at the first bounce winning the first clearance and getting a much-needed forward entry.

Unfortunately, only a behind could be scored.

Aaron Van Den Berghe tried to get his team the first tap in the ruck but was up against a much bigger bodied Tatura player who was making it difficult.

Jack Sheridan, Blade Johns and Will Davey were working overtime in the backline trying their best to rebound the ball out of defence.

There was much better endeavor shown by the team in this quarter, but unfortunately, they were not able to get the much-needed goals.

Half time scores were Euroa 1-3-9 to Tatura 6-7-43.

The third quarter was much of the same as the first half, with the larger bodies of Tatura making it difficult for the Euroa players.

Tatura were again able to score goals and our attempts forward were difficult.

The backline of Will, Jack and Doug Kipping were still battling hard.

Darby and Ethan were trying their best to get the ball moving forward, with some nice entries into the forwards of Sam Mills, Pat Holden and Pat Murphy providing some leads.

At the end of the third quarter scores were Euroa 1-4-10 to Tatura 9-10-64.

At the three-quarter time break the players were asked to slow the play down and play some possession football.

That is exactly what they did.

Ollie Wilson, Ollie Robertson, Ollie Swain, Ben Creevey and Darby provided leads and kept possession.

Ethan on the half back line clunked some good marks and was able to get the ball going forward to Ben and Darby through the centre.

Will Davey was still working his heart out in the back line.

To Euroa’s credit they were able to stem the flow of goals but were unable to hit the scoreboard themselves.

Final scores were Euroa 1-4-10 to Tatura 11-12-78.

Better players were Ethan Saxon, Darby Hoare, Jack Sheridan, Will Davey, Ollie Swain and Ben Creevey.

The Euroa under 14s now play in the preliminary final against Leitchvillle/Gunbower next Sunday in the hopes of making the Grand Final.

We wish them all the very best.

NETBALL

UNDER 9 v ST BLITZ

By NICOLA BEAVIS

THE under nines and under girls played a great last game of the season with a win against Bouchier St Blitz. It’s great to see the improvement the girls have made since their first game.

A special mention to Eden and Paige who stepped in and played for the opposition after some injuries.

Great season Girls.

Under 11 vs Brendan’s Thunder

By THERESE THOMPSON

IT was a very chilly morning for Euroa Black’s last game of the season.

However, excitement was high to give our best effort against the team we bet by one goal only a few weeks ago.

Highlights from the first quarter included some strong passes out of defence by Evie Buchanan in GD to Tully Watson GA and Jessica Lipscombe in GS.

We welcomed Lylah Hamill back this week and she was seen taking an excellent intercept that was ably backed up by Crystal Lipscombe in WD.

St Brendan’s had a strong start with some strong goalers.

Despite this Chloe Squires GK showed persistence in tracking the tall GS.

Quarter time score: Euroa Black one - St Brendan’s Thunder six.

After a quarter on the interchange, one of our tried and true combinations in defence took the court.

Isla Moore GD and Leila Thompson GK applied great pressure to slow the St Brendan’s goalers.

Highlights were an excellent ball feed from Zara Hill in WA, to Tully GA in the ring. Also, an amazing intercept from Leila at the other end in GK that then went with great speed all the way down the court, resulting in a goal.

A better quarter from Euroa to slightly close the gap.

Half time score: Euroa Black four - St Brendan’s Thunder eight.

New shooters took the court this quarter for Euroa, Lylah to GS and Evie to GA.

The Girls worked hard in this quarter and managed to keep St Brendan’s to only one goal.

It was a strong, relentless effort in defence.

We had reduced to lead to only 3 goals.

Third quarter score: Euroa Black Six - St Brendan’s Thunder nine.

Euroa had a strong start with a lucky bounce off the post going in our favour and allowing Evie and Zara to convert in goals.

Our girls never gave up but were unfortunately not able catch St Brendan’s Thunder.

Final score: Euroa Black 9 - St Brendan’s Thunder 12.

After the game, Euroa Black player received participation medals to commemorate a great year that has seen the girls make huge improvements in their netball.

Well done Euroa Black.

Award winners this week were Chloe Squires and Zara Hill.
