    GOODBYE BAGS: Single-use plastic bags can have a devastating effect on the local environment, and will be phased out by local supermarkets by June 30.

    BY July 1, all IGA, Woolworths and Coles supermarkets will go single-use plastic bag free.

    This past year, pressure has been mounting on supermarkets to stop offering plastic bags to customers, in a bid to eliminate the harmful non-biodegradable plastics from entering the environment.

    Nearly four billion plastic bags are used each year in Australia, with each bag taking more than 1000 years to decompose.
