Winter Paralympics beckon for Shirl’s grandson Mark Soyer

IN TRAINING: Mark Soyer on the Perisher Slopes during a competition. Mark is hoping to make it to PyeongChang for the Winter Olympics next year.

MARK Soyer is Australia’s number one sit-skier.

Mark grew up in Benalla, and was a talented sportsman.

When he was 26 he severed his spinal cord when he struck a log hidden in the grass when riding his motorbike on his parents’ farm.

This accident rendered Mark a paraplegic, but it didn’t dampen his passion for sport and desire to compete.

After trying his hand at wheelchair basketball, rugby, and tennis, he found para-alpine skiing.

Now 35, Mark has had a very successful career in the sport.
