YOUNG MUSO AWARDED: Euroa Secondary College student John Bennett was awarded with the Shepparton Young Instrumentalist of the Year award recently. He competed against students across all instruments and ages to take out the $500 prize.

YEAR nine Euroa Secondary College (ESC) student John Bennett has soared to new musical heights after recently being awarded with the Shepparton Young Instrumentalist of the Year award.

The 15 year old Caveat local joined around 100 students from across the North East and surrounding areas to compete at the event, held at the Eastbank Performing Arts Centre in Shepparton last month.

John’s saxophone piece, a medley of two Charlie Parker solo transcriptions, took out the winning $40 first prize for the under 16 woodwind division against saxophone, clarinet and flute players.

He was also awarded the Stage Presence Award for this section, a $50 prize.

John’s saxophone teacher and ESC band director Nick Lester said his winning performance earned him an invitation to perform in the Gala Concert later that day against the top students from across all divisions and ages.

“With another stunning performance that deeply impressed the judges and audience alike, he took out the top prize of $500, and has been invited to perform solo with the Goulburn Valley Orchestra,” he said.
